Become a Certified Junior Naturalist!

The Junior Naturalist series for kids ages 8-12 features hands-on science discovery, journaling, and art to encourage children to have fun while learning about the natural world. Attend six of nine programs to become a certified Junior Naturalist!

Salt Marsh Investigations
September 2, 4 – 6:30 p.m. at Palmetto Islands County Park
Get up-close and personal with many of the fascinating animals and plants that live in a coastal salt marsh and maritime forest. Prepare to get wet and muddy!

Insect Safari
September 9, 4- 6:30 p.m. at James Island County Park
Did you know there are more than a million species of insects? Discover some interesting local insects, their adaptations for living in this environment, and why “creepy crawlies” aren’t bad at all.

Barrier Island Exploration
September 12, 10 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. at Kiawah Beachwalker Park
Amazing things are found where the land meets the sea. You will learn about natural treasures by pulling a seine net, digging for animals in the sand, and exploring the dynamic shoreline. Prepare to get wet and sandy!

Feathered Friends
September 23, 4: – 6:30 p.m. at James Island County Park
Through hands-on activities and an interactive nature ramble, you will learn about special bird adaptations, behaviors, and how to identify common species.

Naturally Nocturnal
September 26, 7 – 9 p.m. at Caw Caw Interpretive Center
Discover wildlife when the moon rises and the sun sets. Learn about nocturnal animals in a fun way. We’ll even share a story around a campfire!

Botany Buffet
September 30, 4 – 6:30 p.m. at Palmetto Islands County Park
Have you ever wondered what flowers taste like? Join us and you might find out! Discover plant anatomy, diversity, and cool uses of local plants.

One Earth
October 7, 4 – 6:30 p.m. at Mount Pleasant Pier
With a population around seven billion, humans can have quite an impact on the environment we all share. Learn about natural resource use, land development, and ways you can make a difference to keep our home planet healthy.

Animal Sleuths
October 14, 4 – 6:30 p.m. at Caw Caw Interpretive Center
We can find out a lot about an animal without ever seeing it! Learn to recognize important skull features, follow a set of footprints through the woods, and figure out an animal’s diet by what it left behind.

Freshwater Wetland Discovery & Graduation Picnic
October 17, 10 a.m. -12:30 p.m. at Caw Caw Interpretive Center
You may be surprised to discover what lives in the cypress swamp and surrounding wetlands at Caw Caw. We’ll get wet and muddy during our investigation of aquatic habitats and use microscopes to observe collected animals.
