From our friends at South Carolina Environmental Law Project…
SCELP needs your help!
Help us protect the very special
– Lewis Ocean Bay Heritage Preserve –
and all its unique inhabitants by saying ‘NO’ to this mine!
What is going on?
? Edge Road mine is a 4.8-acre mining operation adjacent to Lewis Ocean Bay Heritage Preserve.
? DHEC had rescinded its general operating permit due to an outdated General Coastal Zone Consistency Certification, which is required in coastal areas to protect water resources.
?The mine, operated by Soilutions, has since applied for an individual mining permit to expand their mining operation to 33 acres and dig 50 feet.
What is at stake?
?Expansion of this mine may impact the hydrology of Lewis Ocean Bay.
?Lewis Ocean Bay is a Heritage Preserve home to 23 Carolina Bays. Carolina Bays and their unique inhabitants require a particular level of moisture in the soil.
?Adjacent mining could dangerously ‘drain’ out the wetland ecosystem.
What can you do?
Join us in saying ‘NO’ to this mine!
Public comments can be made to DHEC until July 15th.
