Backman’s Seafood is located at 1851 Sol Legare Road here in Charleston. It is approximately 6.88 acres located in Charleston County and is coded as General Commercial. It is accessed by the island’s main thoroughfare, Sol Legare Road. In the “Sol Legare Community Workshop” held by the Charleston County Zoning & Planning Department October 30, 2017, as one of several commercial areas of need. Backman’s Seafood was identified as a community asset in the “Sol Legare Community Plan Preserving the history and culture of a small historic African-American community on James Island” which was adopted by the County Council March 27, 2018. Sol Legare Island is 2.5 miles long and runs parallel with the nearby coastline of Folly Beach. Today, the island is comprised of rural residential lots in an unincorporated section of Charleston County and is surrounded by tidal marsh or wetlands. Backman Community Development Network Inc is a private nonprofit organization incorporated in the State of South Carolina. The primary area of benefit shall be the Charleston Tri-County area; however, other communities may be supported by the Corporation.
