Dr. Nic Butler, public historian and manager of CCPL’s Charleston Archives, will be presenting an illustrated <\/span>review of the most significant facts about Lowcountry rice history that form the basis for our shared heritage. <\/span><\/span>

<\/span> Much of the Lowcountry’s culture, history and economy grew out of the planting and cultivation of rice by thousands of slaves brought to the area from West Africa. Money from rice created an elite society of wealthy planters, and the crop played a dominate role in the state’s economy and culture for several generations.<\/span><\/span>

<\/span><\/span> The presentation will be given on four occasions:<\/span>
