An Affirmative Action: What\u2019s Your Race Card?<\/b><\/p>\n

What\u2019s your race card?
That\u2019s the question being posed in downtown Charleston by the Passages Art Collective during their autumn exhibit and sale to be held during the 30th Annual MOJA FESTIVAL<\/a> in Charleston, SC.<\/p>\n

The show features the diverse work of 15 extraordinary painters, sculptors, fine-art quilters, and multi-media artists from around the country – including Arianne King Comer, whose indigo-fused batiks have earned her international acclaim, and James Denmark, whose collage and color-inspired work has garnered a place in numerous prestigious collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. <\/p>\n

Inspired by \u201cThe Race Card Project,\u201d currently heard on National Public Radio hosted by Michelle Norris, the show will open with a viewing of 6 word race cards written by folks who have each written six words that reveal an experience or understanding of race. The collective is inviting gallery visitors to express, on cards provided at the event, their own six words that speak for a personal perspective related to race. The public is encouraged to share their \u201cSix Words,\u201d at any time during the exhibit, and every card will remain on display at Emanuel AME Church during the two weeks of the art show.<\/p>\n

Talking about race is difficult, and summarizing it in six words is challenging, but the outcome of the exercise promises to be expansive and profound. An Affirmative Action at the Passages Gallery explores the deeply-seeded beliefs, exposes the pain, and presents the promise of the diverse world that we share.<\/p>\n
