At least five homeless people died on the streets of Charleston last winter. That chill is about to return.

On Saturday, November 12, Slums to Slumber and Lowcountry Up is Good will present the community with a model tiny house and a screening of the film, Destiny’s Bridge. The film is a story of 80 people living the woods off the grid for eight years and the tiny house effort borne in this community of formerly homeless people in New Jersey who challenged the system.

The day long event will open at 10:am with filmmaker Ultravision presenting their model tiny house on wheels for public visits in the parking lot of Advent Evengelical Lutheran Church at 3347 Rivers Ave, North Charleston, SC 29405. At 4 pm there will be a reception where the public can meet local Tiny House Advocates, the film makers and representatives of Slums to Slumber and Lowcountry Up is Good.

At 7 pm, there will be a screening of the film Destiny’s Bridge with documentary producer and homeless advocate, Jack Ballo followed by a discussion by the film maker. The film presents the successful eight year struggle by a tiny house homeless community in New Jersey to resist eviction. You can view a trailer for the film at https://youtu.be/WaWnFdy6-aA
Over 600 chronically homeless people in Charleston and North Charleston now live on the fringes of society, evading law enforcement and agencies they find degrading. While tent city has disappeared, nine other large homeless encampments and uncounted other small group camps are hidden on wooded property around Charleston await. They dread return of the cold. There is time to save some of those people from that cold and the misery and death it brings. After six months of effort, Cyrus Kamini is preparing to open the Charleston area’s first hybrid Tiny House Village and the Tiny House Fit for A King completed last Spring is finished and waiting to be moved there. It’s hoped to reopen the first village before Christmas.

According to Slums to Slumber Executive Director Cyrus Kamini, “To end homelessness we must first remove the insurmountable barriers to housing. We can’t have a city of nine dollar an hour jobs and two thousand dollar a month rents. Many people want a tiny house and thanks to changing how we work with building codes and zoning, we believe we have a way to begin opening Tiny houses before Christmas and to have an entire village open by late winter.”

For more information contact Cyrus Kamini at (843) 460-7462 or see https://www.facebook.com/Slums-to-Slumber-CHS-1111318102250364/

Tiny House Tour & Film Screening (Destiny’s Bridge) Saturday, Nov. 12 All Day, beginning at 10am 3347 Rivers Ave, North Charleston, SC

[3,34,2,19,37,8,52,10,5,70,59,33
