Airguns are so loud that they disturb, injure or kill marine life, harm commercial fisheries, and disrupt coastal economies. These blasts are repeated every ten seconds, 24 hours a day, for days and weeks at a time. Seismic airgun testing currently being proposed in the Atlantic will injure 138,000 whales and dolphins and disturb millions more, according to government estimates.

Seismic airguns are towed behind ships and shoot loud blasts of compressed air through the water and miles into the seabed, which reflect back information about buried oil and gas deposits. These blasts harm marine mammals, sea turtles, fish and other wildlife.

Impacts include temporary and permanent hearing loss, abandonment of habitat, disruption of mating and feeding, and even beach strandings and death. For whales and dolphins, which rely on their hearing to find food, communicate, and reproduce, being able to hear is a life or death matter.

In addition to being devastating for marine life, seismic airguns are the first step toward dangerous and dirty offshore drilling, with associated habitat destruction, oil spills and contribution to climate change and ocean acidification. Oceana is working to halt the use of seismic airguns, and stop the expansion of dangerous offshore drilling.

Samantha became an activist when a historic 1,400-year-old live oak tree, called the Angel Oak, became threatened by a large development. She founded the organization “Save the Angel Oak” to protect the beloved tree on Johns Island, through the preservation of surrounding forests and wetlands. Founded in 2008, the group successfully built a grassroots campaign that culminated in over 10,000 donations from people all over the world, and raised over $5.9 million. “Save the Angel Oak” purchased 36 acres of land surrounding the tree, which is now forever protected by conservation easements. Samantha also worked for the Sierra Club as a Conservation and Development Coordinator in South Carolina and for National Sierra Club as a Clean Energy Campaign Organizer. Her work culminated in the passage of solar energy legislation in the state. Samantha is using the knowledge acquired in her previous campaigns to work tirelessly toward protecting her first true love, the ocean.

FOR MORE INFO:
Feb 5 Event on Facebook
Robert Lunz Group South Carolina Chapter Sierra Club

Join the Sierra Club and Samantha Siegel for an important discussion: “The Impacts of Seismic Airguns in the Atlantic Ocean” Thursday, February

[25,24,34,2,12,36,5,58,9
