S. Composting Council<\/a>. Charleston County began composting yard waste in 1993 and averaged about 20,000 tons per year. Today the Compost Facility processes nearly 60,000 tons per year. That is a lot of material being kept out of the landfill! Additionally, the facility is the first in the state permitted to compost commercial food waste and, in the first six months of the pilot program, processed over 500 tons of food waste.
