Maroons were escaped slaves who fled into the swamps and formed small communities in order to survive. Places like Four Holes Swamp provided many resources for food and herbal medicines, as well as materials to craft everything from tools to trade goods.  They were also places of respite and healing for the downtrodden and mistreated.<\/p>\n<p>James Williams, one of those escaped slaves, eventually made his way from Four Holes Swamp to freedom in Maine.
