Canoe / Kayak on Wambaw Creek
Saturday, April 16
Trip Leader: Bill Turner
Difficulty level: Easy
April is a great time to paddle this tributary of the Santee River, with trees starting to green up, prothonotary warblers returning from the tropics and iris and golden club flowers beginning to bloom. This is a relatively easy trip of approximately 8 miles, suitable for novice paddlers. If there’s time we’ll stop at nearby St. James Santee Parish Church, an 18th century structure that served as a “chapel of ease” for plantation owners along the Santee River.
Canoe / Kayak on the Little Pee Dee River
Thursday, April 28
Trip Leader: Bill Turner
Difficulty level: Moderate
Five miles above its confluence with the Great Pee Dee, the Little Pee Dee divides and braids through a primordial cypress swamp into multiple interconnected channels, creating one of the most beautiful, unique, and secluded paddling experiences in the South Carolina coastal plain. This is a loop trip. Participants should be comfortable with some upstream paddling and maneuvering boats through tight passages, so this is not for beginners.
