GREENBIZ SPOTLIGHT: ReCandle Charleston

ReCandle Charleston is a new local green business that recycles used candles from weddings, events and local businesses in the Charleston community to create new beautiful, long-burning one-of-a-kind candles. They are on a mission to reduce candle waste, which can take up to 1,000 years to decompose in a landfill. And they are doing it in style!

ReCandle-RecycleCandles

According to Erica Ward, founder of ReCandle Charleston, it takes more than a BILLION POUNDS OF WAX to create the candles made in the U.S. every year. And that doesn’t include the $700M in candles sold each year in the US that are imported from around the world.

The environmental issues with all of these partially used candles goes beyond just the landfill problem. Given that most of the candle wax used these days is either soy or paraffin, there are environmental impacts in their production that directly add to our climate change crisis.

Obviously, addressing climate change is going to take a multi-pronged approach.

“ReCandle Charleston offers a sustainable, closed-loop solution to candles, making Charleston one of a handful of cities in the world to offer a registered candle recycling program. Creating new value chains to extend the life of locally-available resources, with minimal production or added materials” is how ReCandle Charleston is making an impact.

And we are all for it!
