INNOVATION: New Tech Offers Better Approach to Battery Recycling

‘Electro-extraction’ is one new technology that could improve how we recycle lithium-ion batteries.

““The number of batteries is just going to exponentially increase,” says Megan O’Connor, CEO and founder of Nth Cycle, a startup that developed new battery-recycling technology. “And the real issue is that there’s currently very little end-of-life waste management for all these devices. Because it’s a relatively new product—lithium-ion batteries haven’t been around for very long in terms of other waste materials we see, like plastics. So there are very few technologies and strategies to recycle these.”

Right now, O’Connor says, most battery recycling relies on dissolving the battery with acid and then using solvents to pull out individual metals. “You can imagine thousands and thousands of cycles of just flushing solvent through a system to pull out these metals, one by one,” she says.”
