ENGAGE TO EDUCATE
Engage to Educate programs leverage community resources to help teachers excite their students about the learning process. These programs improve academics and inspire active learning. They take a whole system approach to students’ mental, physical and emotional development.

Engage 2 Educate was founded by Ian Sanchez to connect students, teachers and resources in exciting ways.

Ian Sanchez, founderIan has been giving tours in SC since 1999 and is one of the most sought after naturalists and historians in Charleston. Having roots in Barbados, he has a deep connection and unique insight into the story of Charleston and its connections to the history of the United States and the world.

For the last 14 years, he worked as a naturalist in the Cape Romain Wildlife Refuge and a kayak guide for Coastal Expeditions.

He has also led thousands of walking tours through the streets, back alley ways and buildings of downtown Charleston where most people miss.

As the Executive Director of the Lowcountry Environmental Education Program, he designed curriculum and led thousands of school groups through unfrequented parts of the city and surrounding areas weaving together fascinating stories of science and social studies.

As a scuba diver and educator at the SC Aquarium, Ian has led interpretations of the unique aquatic life of the Carolinas and has worked with the US Fish and Wildlife sea turtle rescue program on Cape island.

As a licensed captain, Ian wrote the manual and created a training course for Clemson Cooperative Extension to teach nature and history certifications for tours in the Charleston water ways.

In 2008, Ian kayaked across the state of SC to film an award winning documentary for SCETV called the “Web of Water”.

He presently sits on the board of the Environmental Education Association of South Carolina, the Barbados Legacy Foundation, the Southeastern Environmental Education Alliance and the South Carolina Outdoor Education Program.
