CHARLESTON GREEN DRINKS: SEPTEMBER 2022
‘RESILIENCE & FLOODING’
SEPTEMBER 20 @ 6PM
COMMONHOUSE ALEWORKS
PARK CIRCLE / NORTH CHS

Here is a current list of co-hosts who will be featured at our next event

  • South Carolina Aquarium – Sara McDonald, Kelly Thorvalson, and Linda Rowe will be talking about their community-based conservation work around resilience, including information about their SeaRise Viewer and their SeaRise project (using the Anecdata platform) on the South Carolina Aquarium Citizen Science App.
  • Root Down Designs – Founder, April Magill, will be talking about about natural building methods and resilience in flooding. Root Down Designs is one of the few licensed firm in the Carolinas that has designed homes using earthen materials such as Rammed Earth, Cob and Hempcrete. From carbon sequestering architecture, to utilizing modern day engineering and building sciences to revive ancient natural building methods Root Down Designs is changing the way we build in the Carolinas!
  • Charleston County Flooplain Managment – The Charleston County Floodplain Management Division is responsible for reviewing all proposed development in the floodplain, enforcing the minimum standards set by the National Flood Insurance Program, participating in the Community Rating System, coordinating the Charleston Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan, and conducting public outreach relating to flooding and resilience.

The brief intros will be followed by tabling time and open networking, giving us all the chance to both dig deeper into the issues and better connect with one another.

The CGD steering committee will be meeting at Commonhouse Aleworks from 5pm-6pm and we are encouraging other environmental groups to consider scheduling their own meetings/gatherings on site in a similar way. It’s a chance to get out of the office early, beat the traffic, and maybe create some synergistic energy in the process.
