Good God, Congress, stop this man! Impeach him now! Don’t wait until November’s midterms. Do it now!
Donald Trump is out of control. Not only has his military killed more than 100 people because he believes they were carrying drugs, but now he’s turned his guns on his own people – us, you and me, We the People — murdering one, Renee Good, in Minneapolis, and injuring two in Portland.
And yes, it was murder. If you’ve seen the recordings, and most of the world has by now, in slow-motion yet, you know it was murder. There was no reason for that ICE agent, Jonathan Ross, to shoot Ms. Good. But he did shoot her, two or three times, then walked up to her car, looked at her but did nothing to help her, walked away, got into his truck, and drove away. All of it was recorded by several cameras.
If you or I did that, it would be an open-and-shut case of murder. But instead, Trump & Co. took over the investigation, barred local or state law enforcement officials from participating or even knowing what was going on, and then, before the investigation even began, they had the unmitigated gall to exonerate the shooter.
Trump even stood before us and tried to make us believe that we do not see what we’re looking at — an old Nazi trick. He insisted that Good “ran over” the agent and that the agent shot her in “self-defense.” He told The New York Times that “she didn’t try to run him over. She ran him over,” even though video footage clearly shows Trump was lying and she did not run him over, she did not knock him down, and he walked away unscathed.
Trump’s turning his guns on his own people is a step too far. It should be a major turning point. It should give every politician who is up for reelection in November — that includes every House member and 34 senators – plenty of reason to ditch him; after all, how can any American support a leader who does that, and what politician can stand before their constituents now and say they support a president who murders his own people?
Congress must screw up its courage and get rid of Trump now because waiting for the midterms will be too late. Trump sees the polls. He knows what the results of every election this year indicate. He knows his White House years could and probably will end abruptly in about one year from now. And that means he and his ilk will do everything they can to accomplish as much as they can before then. And that could mean disaster.
He’s moving that way now, moving at such a blinding speed that it’s hard to take it in.
By invading Venezuela as he did, he gave Russia tacit permission to finish its war on Ukraine and gave China tacit permission to attack Taiwan. He made that especially clear to China when he said that “Taiwan is up to President Xi.” Trump thus took only six words to abandon America’s long-stated promise to defend the island nation from attack by China.
But it goes much deeper than that. Trump also revealed that he envisions a world separated into three distinct “spheres of Influence,” with the United States (Trump) controlling one sphere and Russia and China dividing the rest.
The United States (again, meaning Trump) would control the Western Hemisphere — Greenland, Canada, the United States, Mexico, Central America and South America. If any nation objected, the U.S. would take it by military force, as it did in Venezuela and has threatened to do in Greenland, Colombia, Cuba and Panama. He’s even hinted at using military force in Canada and Mexico.
That leaves the rest of the world. Without American interference, Russia could finish off Ukraine and then wrest control of the rest of Europe, which would be easy enough to conquer since NATO would no longer exist, and the United States would not be there to help them. NATO would have died the moment the United States invaded fellow NATO member Greenland, and the United States’ “sphere of influence” would be limited to the Western Hemisphere.
China would take Taiwan, which the United States would not defend because it’s not in our sphere of influence. After Taiwan, China would be free to bring the rest of the East and Mideast under his control, including Japan, the Koreas, India, all the way down through Australia.
We’ve got to stop this madness. It’s up to Congress to stop it, but it’s up to us to make Congress stop it. We’re doing the right thing by turning out and speaking up, as did millions of us did Saturday and Sunday at anti-ICE demonstrations across the country. Some fought bitter cold and ice to stand on street corners and hold up signs denouncing ICE.
But it’s worth it. It’s paying off. Politicians are listening to us. They see our anger. They need our votes. They will do what we tell them to do — if we tell them.
So please tell them. Dial 202-225-3131, ask for your U.S. representative by name, and tell whoever answers your name, that you are her/his constituent, and that you demand Congress impeach Trump right now. She/he can use legislation that already has been written and impeach him on any of at least 12 counts. Take their choice or use them all, but a president who allows his private militia to murder Americans in his quest for power is a bridge too far and must be stopped.
Then dial 202-224-3121 and ask for your U.S. senator. Tell him or her there is no reason to keep Trump in the White House now and every reason to expel him. The movement to impeach him is growing, and you expect your senator, no matter who he or she has supported in the past, to talk it up among senators and vote to convict at the earliest possible time. Demand a promise. They cannot support a murderer, a probable pedophile, a Klan-worthy racist, a first-class misogynist, a cruel egomaniac who cares nothing about anyone but himself.
Write down what you want to say, make it short, read it and hang up. They’ll never know what we’re thinking unless we tell them. Please, get off the bench and into the game. If we are to regain our democracy, we need every voice. If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem.
