It’s Treason Now

Donald Trump has stepped over the line. It’s treason now.

Our Founding Fathers carefully delineated the crime of treason in Article III, Section III of the U.S. Constitution, narrowly defining its elements and setting forth stringent evidentiary requirements. The Article begins: “Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort…” (ital. mine)

What else can you call Trump’s attitude toward Russia and other dictators anything but “giving them aid and comfort”? He praises dictators around the world, especially Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. He deserts our friends and allies in West Europe, sides with Russia over Ukraine, even threatens to withdraw our military support from Ukraine – a gift of gold to Putin. Trump even stopped sharing information with Ukraine, which robbed Ukraine of its defense against Russian drone attacks, the number of which, of course, Russia immediately increased.

He breaks laws and violates the Constitution with impunity, and he threatens to ignore court orders. Why not? Courts can’t tell kings what to do, and just try to stop him. He owns the FBI, the Justice Department, the military, et cetera. So what’s to stop him?

He threatens to illegally take over Greenland and the Panama Canal, using military force if necessary. He even threatens to annex Canada.

And he wants to do all this as king, but in the name of U.S. president.

Good Lord, People. What more proof do we need that Donald Trump is a super-dangerous megalomaniac who considers himself a king, and he almost is one. So we must stop him — now. We cannot wait. We must get rid of him before he wreaks more havoc. Put him back into the criminal courts where he belongs. Now.

And do not think for one second that we cannot do it. We threw out a king once and we can do it again.

To glimpse into how disgustingly vile Donald Trump is, read on:

A few days ago, as you’ll remember, Trump ordered a freeze on operations of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). A few days after that, Nicholas Enrich, USAID’s acting assistant administrator for global health, released a series of memos he and other senior career officials had written. As reported by Heather Cox Richardson in her Letters from an American newsletter:

“Enrich estimated that without USAID intervention, more than 16 million pregnant women and more than 11 million newborns would not get medical care; more than 14 million children would not get care for pneumonia and diarrhea (among the top causes of preventable deaths for children under the age of 5); 200,000 children would be paralyzed with polio; and 1 million children would not be treated for severe acute malnutrition. There would be an additional 12.5 million or more cases of malaria this year, meaning 71,000 to 166,000 deaths; a 28–32 percent increase in tuberculosis; as many as 775 million cases of avian flu; 2.3 million additional deaths a year in children who could not be vaccinated against diseases; additional cases of Ebola and mpox. The higher rates of illness will take a toll on economic development in developing countries, and both the diseases and the economic stagnation will spill over into the United States.”

Although Secretary of State Marco Rubio promised to create a system for waivers to protect that lifesaving aid, the cuts appear random and the system for reversing them remains unworkable. The programs remain shuttered. Enrich blamed ‘political leadership at USAID, the Department of State, and DOGE, who have created and continue to create intentional and/or unintentional obstacles that have wholly prevented implementation.’”

(Incidentally, later that day Enrich was placed on “administrative leave, effective immediately.”)

Abandoning any of those people to certain death would merit charges of first-degree murder had you or I done it, and a life sentence or more when convicted. But Trump commits them, on purpose, en masse, and gets away with it.

Question: why would Trump commit so many savage crimes? Answer: to get some money he can share with his greedy billionaire friends, it would seem. What else could it be? He’s deserting his own people in America by threatening Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security to save money so his billionaire buddies can have tax cuts. (To be fair, Trump says he will not touch Social Security, but Trump has lied before.) And more and more and more. I get tired of writing about it. .

We can stop all this, and here’s where, as individual citizens, come in. It’s our next big collective step:

The U.S. Senate and House will be at recess from March 15 through March 23. The House officially calls the recess a District Work Period and the Senate officially calls it a State Work Period, but both recesses are specifically designed for members to go home and meet their constituents. They are specifically designed for congresspersons to hold public events, but increasingly they are going out of their way to avoid us. Republican leaders are advising members of both houses not to hold public events because of what happened during the last recess. Large crowds took them to task, sharply.

That’s where we, as individuals, come in. It may sound simple and boring, but phone your representatives and demand that they do their jobs and hold events where we can talk with them face to face. That’s all you really need to do. We need to flood them with those calls, and only individuals acting individually can do that.

They would owe us that at any time, but they specially owe it to us now. We’re a widely divided nation, there is no middle ground, and it’s crunch time. The stakes could hardly be higher: whether we come out of this a democracy or under a neo-Nazi dictatorship. So we need an open heart-to-heart talk with the people in charge. We need to know from their mouths where they stand — we must know where they stand. Come on, People, call them.

There are major roles both the House and Senate can and must play to stop Trump’s marauding through our government. The Senate must find a backbone and do its job by not letting him trample around in offices it created, and have the guts to say no sometime. And the House must impeach him.

Some pundits are saying impeachment is impossible now because Republicans are in lockstep with Trump and they will not change. I disagree. First look at the numbers.

The U.S. Senate currently has 53 Republicans and 47 Democrats, including two independents who caucus with Democrats. There are 35 seats up in 2026, of which 23 are held Republicans. So Democrats only need to gain four seats to retake control of the Senate.

In the House, all 435 voting seats are up for election. Republicans presently have a 221-214 majority, including current vacancies, so when you add in the effect of new maps, Democrats need to gain only five seats to win control.

Those are winnable numbers, made even more winnable when you consider what could happen when those up for re-election next year see during the recess just how furious American voters are. It will only take a few politicians to see the handwriting on the wall and decide enough is enough. It would only take a few to change heart, and though they did it for selfish reasons, those few would become heroes and heroines across America. It could even start a flood.

This is not the Donald Trump Americans elected. He ran on pretenses he never intended to fulfill. He said he’d bring prices down. He’s driving them up. He said he would help farmers. He pulled the rug out from under them. He said, he said, he said. Lies, lies, lies.

So let’s get started getting rid of him. Begin with Congress. Please, call your representatives. If you live in my state of South Carolina, the office phone numbers of our senators are:
