Donald Trump’s Hatred

Quoth Donald J. Trump: “They (Democrats in Congress) wouldn’t vote for it (his “Big Beautiful Bill”) only because they hate Trump, but I hate them, too, you know that? I really do. I hate them. I cannot stand them, because I really believe they hate our country, if you want to know the truth.”

That was the President of the United States of America, speaking to a supposedly bipartisan “Salute to America” event in Des Moines, Iowa, on the evening before the Fourth of July, which signifies our rejection of a king. The event was to celebrate the 250 years since America’s founding. It was a golden opportunity for the President to bring people together.

But instead, Trump used the opportunity to spew more hate, to divide us further instead of showing any attempt to bring us together, and to celebrate himself for pushing his “big beautiful bill” through Congress.

The law is estimated to balloon the national debt by trillions of dollars, which Republicans once unanimously opposed (and a few of them even held out for a while);
will cause the largest ever transfer of wealth from middle class and poor people to the rich; guts investment in science and green energy; spends tens of billions of dollars to expand the violent, reckless, cruel and unconstitutional kidnapping, confinement and deportation of people who’ve committed no crime; hollows out foreign aid; boosts fossil fuels at the expense of renewable energy; and destroys government efforts to address climate change, even as scientists warn of the acute dangers we face from extreme heat, wildfires, storms, and floods like those in Texas.

About those Texas floods: As many as 120 people are dead because of them, and they all might still be alive had not Trump deleted the systems that could have warned them a flood was coming.

You would think that instead of celebrating himself, Trump and all the other billionaires who’ll get a big chunk of money because of that bill would be hanging their heads in shame because of that money’s source. After all, their huge money grab, and the more money they have the more they’ll get, will be largely paid for by taking food away from millions of people, including hungry children (SNAP), and taking health care away from millions more people (Medicaid, which Trump had promised he would never touch.)

So yes, Trump and his billionaire friends should be cowering in shame. But they’re not. They’re celebrating. Trump signed the bill into law on the Fourth of July while surrounded by his minions and as two B-2 bombers, the warplanes that dropped the bunker busters on Iran a few days ago, performed a flyover.

And even though poll after poll has shown the bill to be immensely unpopular with the people, Trump claimed otherwise.

“The people are happy,” he said. “They’re happy.”

Such callousness by Trump and the other billionaires should not come as a surprise. They are capitalists, so they’re used to it. They thrive on it. They depend on it. They exist because of that kind of thinking. Capitalism’s dirty little secret is that capitalism could not exist without there being a certain percentage of people without jobs. If that were not so, where would corporations get their workers? And where would they shed their workers when they deem them unnecessary? And what would hold them until they’re needed again? It is almost literally true that the very richest among us stand on the shoulders of our most destitute.

But not only will Trump funnel money to billionaires via the bill, but he’s also fixed things so that they can even get more money from tax savings. Don’t forget that Trump (DOGE) got rid of more than 11,000 Internal Revenue Service employees, thus severely crimping its ability to audit billionaires. DOGE claimed the force reduction saved money, but according to Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, roughly a half-trillion dollars in revenue will be lost because of the cuts.

Take a quick glance at what else Trump has done to destroy America. The medical journal The Lancet
estimates that Trump’s cuts to USAID will result in more than 14 million deaths in the next five years, and about 4.5 million of those will be children under 5. How proud should Americans be about that? And because of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s changes to the childhood vaccine schedule, we can expect the return of diseases that routine immunizations had all but eliminated in the U.S. Measles cases alone have surged to a record high in the U.S. since the country declared the disease eradicated 25 years ago.

Good Lord, people! What more needs to be said? What more can be said? The man has run amuck and must be stopped. Every one of us, beginning with me, should be on the phone today calling his or her MAGA senator or representative – you’ll find easy instructions at the end of this newsletter — and demand that they hold town hall meetings specifically to explain why they continue to support such a vile creature as Donald Trump, a president who deserted the people who elected him. People knowledgeable about the Constitution agree that he has committed hundreds of impeachable breaches, so why won’t they impeach him?

As I wrote a few days ago, no politician in his right mind who faces an election soon would brag about passing a bill that he knows his supporters abhor. No one would take food away from millions of people, including children, and health care away from millions more people, and expect their help in the next election.

Farmers and other rural folks, small businesspersons, veterans, people who aren’t white, the hospitality segment, construction — all Trump supporters he has abandoned. Why would he desert his base like that knowing all those actions could cause a blue tsunami in the upcoming midterm elections that would cripple him and almost certainly cause his successful impeachment? Why would he do that if he feared an election?

The only reason I can think of is that he doesn’t believe there will be one. He can’t cancel elections, of course, but he can create enough havoc to cause their “postponement.” He could create a reason to declare martial law and then claim it’s too dangerous to hold elections. He could have his Justice Department investigate various election offices (which he is doing) and find them to be corrupt, incompetent or whatever, causing the public to lose faith in them. He could get MAGA-controlled state legislators to pass laws that give MAGAs all the advantages. And those are just things I can think of. You know he has more. He’s even openly laying plans to serve an unconstitutional third term, so that must tie in.

We obviously cannot expect Congress to help us, the Supreme Court appears on the brink of capitulating, and the legacy press continues to fail us. Latest example regarding the legacy press: On the Fourth of July, parades, fireworks demonstrations and other celebrations were held all over the nation, and the next day’s New York Times covered them with a feel-good story that included 16 photographs. It even covered that hotdog-eating contest on Coney Island (the winner ate 40 of them). On the same day, No Kings 2.0 rallies also were held around the nation, but the Times covered those rallies in one-half of a sentence, by tacking the story onto the end of another sentence. Its entire coverage of the No Kings rallies was: “Some communities in the Los Angeles area canceled their Fourth of July celebrations over fears of immigration raids, while organizers of some Independence Day events planned to use them to protest the Trump administration’s agenda.” And there was not one photo of a No Kings rally.

So I repeat myself here, but it’s necessary. If ever there was an all-hands-on-deck time, this is it. We need every voice, every person, every vote. We the People are all left to protect our democracy, so we must do it. If you’re not part of the solution, you are part of the problem. Please, do something, but do it today.

We are winning and we will win – if we act and do not quit.
