Why would any sane person want Donald Trump to continue as our president? I\u2019ve never liked him. On Feb. 23, 2020, as the Joe Biden-Donald Trump presidential campaign was beginning, I wrote that I did not like Trump \u201cbecause he publicly mocks people who have physical limitations; because he\u2019s a draft dodger; because he\u2019s a draft dodger who overrules generals who know what they\u2019re doing; because he is a pathological, unapologetic liar, with well more than 16,000 lies or misleading statements documented since he took office; because he used his casino in New Jersey to launder money for the Russian Mafia before he got caught; because he is a racist; because he refers to women as dogs; because he has decimated our State Department\u201432 embassies don\u2019t even have ambassadors, and some of them are in major countries; because he gives important positions to unqualified people just because they give him money; because he demands people in his administration be loyal to him, not to the Constitution for which they both have sworn to defend; because he takes his daily news briefings from Fox News rather than government experts who know what they\u2019re doing; because he is so low and so self-centered that he took thousands of dollars from his own charitable foundation and spent it on himself, including spending $10,000 for a life-sized photograph of himself to hang in one of his clubs; because he ran a fraudulent \u2018university\u2019 until he got caught, then paid $25 million to the students to muffle the story so it would not become a campaign issue; because he had affairs with at least two women while he was married, then bribed them with more than a quarter-million dollars to keep quiet; because he cozies up to the world\u2019s dictators\u2014Russia, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, North Korea and others\u2014while insulting our allies around the world and diminishing our standing in the world; because he insults our military heroes; because he fills important posts with titles that are preceded by \u2018acting,\u2019 thus giving him virtually dictatorial power over those offices; because he\u2019s a schoolyard bully: \u2018Flatter me and I\u2019ll reward you, but criticize me and I\u2019ll hurt you;\u2019 because he gave billions of dollars to rich people through his mammoth tax cut and trickled on the rest of us; because he brags about grabbing women by their crotches; because he withdrew us from the Kyoto Protocol, even though more than 99 percent of environmental scientists around the world say humans are at the very least adding to conditions that are leading us into an environmental disaster; because he opened up so much sensitive federal land to oil drillers; because he is so ignorant and\/or cruel he ended the Endangered Species Act, the very act that saved bald eagles, alligators and other wildlife species from extinction; because he insists on drilling in pristine Alaskan areas, and even off the South Atlantic coast although whatever oil is there is not needed, not wanted by anyone except oil drillers, would seriously harm whales and other wildlife, and present a real danger to the region\u2019s crucial tourist industry; because he promised to fix our crumbling infrastructure but hasn\u2019t even hinted at a start; because he has ballooned our deficit so much it will reach $1 trillion in 2020, something that used to be abhorrent to Republicans; because if you look up the words \u2018fascist\u2019 and \u2018demagogue\u2019 in the dictionary you\u2019ll see his fingerprints and photograph; because either he doesn\u2019t realize or doesn\u2019t care that a tariff on any nation is really a tax on me; because he accepted Vladimir Putin\u2019s denials of Russian interference in the 2016 election over the unanimous assessment of the American intelligence community; because he deserted our allies the Kurds and allowed Turkey to attack them; because he is such a hypocrite he tossed out \u2018chain migration\u2019 after allowing his own wife\u2019s family members to come here that very same way; because he separated thousands of innocent children from their parents and some of them will never be reunited; because he promised during his campaign that he would release his tax returns, but now he\u2019s asking the US Supreme Court to let him keep them private; because he backed out of the nonproliferation deal with Iran, which has made matters so much worse for the world; because he\u2019s backed out of so many deals that world leaders are left to doubt whether the United States can be trusted; because with virtually no discrimination he has tossed out his predecessors\u2019 diplomatic work, destroyed nonproliferation and climate accords, and disrupted alliances that underpin the international order; because he fires anyone he thinks are not loyal to him even though they took an oath to be loyal to the Constitution, not to him; because, well, because on and on…\u201d I wrote those words more than five years ago. Biden won that race, but Trump won the next one, and I dislike Trump even more today than I did then, astonishingly more, because, and here we go again, because he clearly purposefully disobeyed a court order for him to return airplanes carrying Venezuelan deportees to a U.S.-contracted prison in El Salvador, which should result in his expulsion from the White House; because he claimed that in many cases courts do not have authority over him; because a jury found him guilty of sexually assaulting a woman, a case in which the judge said he raped her; because he has worked to deny women and girls access to health care, including the right not to die needlessly from a miscarriage; because he has undermined women\u2019s right to control their own bodies; because he defunded or stopped the programs that protect women\u2019s right to be safe from domestic violence and sexual assault; because he has ended programs designed to protect women\u2019s employment and has fired women from positions of authority; because he has allowed Elon Musk\u2019s rats unfettered access to the Treasury\u2019s payments system; because he banned birthright citizenship; because he refused to spend money appropriated by Congress; because he closed independent agencies without Congress\u2019 approval; because he substituted political loyalists for civil servants; because he named totally unqualified Keystone Kops to high-ranking positions in his government because they would be loyal to him; because he unleashed the military on civilians; because he rescinded grants that President Biden granted to farmers, abandoning them with bills and loans they have no way of paying; because he disbanded the U.S. Agency for International Aid (USAID), thus leaving millions of people, including children, at risk of dying of starvation or preventable health problems; because he is willing to destroy Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security so billionaires can have tax breaks; because he is turning our democracy into a neo-Nazi dictatorship that honors billionaires only; because he has signed more than 100 executive orders that attack our freedoms and threaten immigrants\u2019 rights, LGBTQ+ protections, free speech and more; because he lies, he grifts and he bullies; because he has been convicted of 34 felonies for falsifying business records in a hush-money scheme; because he was legitimately charged with committing four felonies involving elections fraud (for trying to overturn the 2020 election, conspiring to defraud the United States, conspiring to obstruct an official proceeding and obstructing and attempting to obstruct an official proceeding), 40 felony counts involving mishandling White House documents that he brought back to Mar-a-Lago, and 10 felony charges in Georgia for his efforts to overturn the 2020 election; because he allowed the world\u2019s richest person to deny food to the world\u2019s poorest people so the money could go to America\u2019s richest people;<\/p>\n

because he signed executive orders that require proof of U.S. citizenship for anyone to vote in federal elections, require states to count all ballots on Election Day, and give the executive branch control of federal elections; because he promised that he would reduce consumer prices but his policies are driving those prices up; because his policies are clobbering the stock market; because he had ICE agents in plainclothes and unmarked cars detain an international student at Tufts University because she had written an editorial for her college’s newspaper that defended Palestine in its war with Israel; because he had the Department of Health and Human Services cancel more than $12 billion in federal grants to states that affect programs for infectious diseases, mental health and addiction treatment; because he canceled funding for research on vaccines and treatments for future pandemics, and already highly contagious cases of measles surging in Kansas, Ohio and Texas; because he is tearing down the entire Department of Education; because he defended his administration\u2019s most senior officials of their
\nastounding incompetence for planning military strikes on Yemen over an unsecure commercial messaging app, on which they had included national security reporter and editor in chief of The Atlantic Jeffrey Goldberg; because he cut vaccine alliance funds that could kill 1.2 million children worldwide; because he rants at judges who rule against his policies, calling them lunatics who have committed sedition and treason and who should be impeached; because he constantly attacks our freedoms; because he has threatened to withhold millions of dollars from American universities that do not follow his dei policies \u2013 read that his misogynist and white-supremacist policies; because he signed executive orders suspending security clearances for law firms that represent Democratic clients and barring the government from hiring employees from those firms; because he is demanding the \u201cright of first offer\u201d on all major future infrastructure and natural resources projects, under a revised deal with Ukraine; because he allowed Vladimir Putin to humiliate him, and thus the United States of America, by keeping him waiting an hour for a phone conversation while Putin joked with his friends; because he openly sucks up to Putin while destroying our relations with our longtime allies; because although he once denied knowing anything about Project 2025, he is now using it as his blueprint to destroy our democracy and install himself as the first American dictator; because he is working to take over colleges and universities, beginning with a high-profile fight against Columbia University in which his administration withheld $400 million in grants until the university bent to his will; because he is stripping words like climate crisis, diversity, health disparity, peanut allergies, science-based,\u2019 segregation, stereotypes and understudied from government communications in an explicit attempt to reshape the way Americans think; because in an executive order titled \u201crestoring truth and sanity to American history\u201d, Trump tried to change the ways in which Americans understand our history; because he insists on illegally \u201creclaiming\u201d the Panama Canal and \u201cdoing whatever is necessary\u201d to bring Greenland to heel; because he has mounted a direct attack on the three biggest funders of American science: the Centers for Disease Control, National Institutes of Health and National Science Foundation; because he intimidates major media outlets by suing them for ludicrous reasons and threatening to destroy them; because he silenced the hugely important Voice of America; because he prevents news sources he does not like from attending his news conferences; because he exhibits his disdain for Congress; because he attempts to chill speech through deportation; because he tolerates incompetent cabinet secretaries who endanger American troops; because he, well, the list goes on and on, but no need to belabor the point. Still, my opening question remains: Why would any sane person want Donald Trump to continue as our president?<\/p>\n
