SPOTLIGHT: Addressing Food Waste in the Lowcountry

From our partners at Food Rescue Us / Charleston…

Food Rescue US is a nonprofit organization that engages volunteers to pick up excess food from restaurants, grocery stores, caterers, farmers markets, etc. that would otherwise be wasted and deliver it to social service organizations that feed people experiencing food insecurity. The organization has recently launched a site in Charleston, which is actively recruiting donors, recipients and volunteers. For more information, please visit www.foodrescue.us.

How to participate:
Businesses interested in donating food
Organizations interested in receiving food
Individuals or organizations interested in fundraising or making monetary donations
Additional information:
Food Rescue US is a national nonprofit organization focusing on reducing hunger and food waste – two major crises in our country. Food Rescue US uses technology to  connect volunteer food rescuers across the country to deliver fresh excess food from businesses that have too much to people who have too little. Volunteers called food rescuers directly transfer the food to local social service agencies that feed individuals and families experiencing food insecurity.

Food donors use the Food Rescue US app to list what food they have to donate and when it is available for pick up. Food Rescue US then coordinates with local social service agencies within the donor’s neighborhood or immediate surrounding area to receive the food. The volunteers log on to the site, select a local food donor to rescue food from, pick up the food and drop it off at the coordinating social service agency. It’s simple, fast and effective, taking on average, 30-minutes per food rescue.
