If you did not participate in Saturday’s Hands Off! rally around the nation, you missed something special. If you did participate, you know it was special. It was a nationwide Happening.
No one knows exactly how many people showed up at the more than 1,200 towns, cities and capitols where rallies were held. CNN guessed “millions”, and the final official estimate was 5.3 million.
But who knows? And who cares? Whatever the actual total was, if you saw photos of rallies around the nation, especially the aeriel shots, you know the turnout was huge.
And you also know the rallies were amazingly peaceful. It says a lot that 5 million highly motivated people can gather around the nation and there not be one arrest anywhere. Like the Women’s March on Washington, D.C., before it, Not One!
Also like the March on Washington, Saturday’s gatherings were more than just peaceful. They were joyful. There is no question that the one I attended was typical, and it was joyful.
I traveled with my wife and two grown daughters to our Capitol in Columbia, and it was a gathering of serious, angry, driven, happy people, people know we’re in a war, know we are winning, and know we can win.
We packed the Capitol’s steps, making it treacherous for anyone to traverse up and down them. We swarmed the grounds and loudly cheered on a succession of speakers who pushed us on. We formed a long line of enthusiastic people along the busy thoroughfare that runs by the Capitol and waved our posters to a never-ending stream of horn-honking, fist-raising supporters as they passed by.
Posters were everywhere. Among my favorites:
The Only Person Trump Ever Hired
Who Was Actually Qualified
To Do Their Job Was
Stormy Daniels
The Boston Tea Party
Was A Protest
Against a Tariff
Penguins Could Govern Better
Elect a Clown,
Get a Circus
Trump Robs from the Poor
To Give to the Rich
OMG
GOP
WTF
The Constitution Was Written
To Protect Us From
Exactly This Nightmare
What Cory Said
Honk If You Never
Texted War Plans
So Fucked Up That
Even Introverts Are Here
Bottom line: Our mission is right and we are alive, alert, growing, full of energy, and the momentum is on our side. There will be other opportunities to gather this summer, and I cannot imagine that anyone who attended one of Saturday’s events will not want to be there – plus many more who will come to understand how important being in this battle together in big numbers is and join us.
These events encourage judges, frighten MAGA senators and House members who are up for re-election, alert Democrats in Washington that we are watching them and expect them to quit whimpering and do their job.
Moreover, it shows that we are winning this battle, and if we keep doing what we’re doing now – just showing up and speaking out – we will win.
