Although NSPM-7 and 2025-NSS may not ring a bell when you read them, both are Donald Trump-ordered documents that, if implemented, will radically change every American’s life – and not in any good way.
NSPM-7 is shorthand for Trump’s “National Security Presidential Memorandum #7: Countering Domestic Terrorism and Organized Political Violence.” It essentially is an attack on free speech.
It directs federal law enforcement agencies to investigate, arrest and prosecute any progressive organizations or persons on charges of “domestic terrorism” if they show signs of holding virtually any left-of-center political views. Signs of “domestic terrorism” include “anti-capitalism,” “anti-Christianity,” “extremism on migration, race and gender,” and opposition to “traditional American views on family, religion and morality.”
That could mean anything, which is the whole point. The FBI could arrest you for holding a protest sign, and it could disrupt such resistance organizations as Indivisible, Common Cause – too many to name – simply for espousing views contrary to Trump’s.
The memorandum identifies “Antifa” as a “domestic terrorist organization” (although it isn’t even an organization) and argues that it supports overthrowing the federal government; “extremism in migration, race and gender”; and “hostility towards those who hold traditional American views on family, religion and morality”.
Add all that together and it sounds loathsome, and it is loathsome, but there are reasons for hope. A group called Inequality Media Civic Action is pushing Congress hard to stop NSPM-7’s implementation, and Congress may be listening. More than 30 members of Congress wrote a letter expressing concern that NSPM-7 could be ,and certainly would be, used to crack down on dissent.
Furthermore, the Brennan Center for Justice analyzed the memo and found numerous flaws. For starters, it says that the memo “cherry-picked” incidents of violence that were not coordinated campaigns of violence and intimidation. As examples, it named two assassination attempts against Trump, attacks against ICE officers during 2025 protests in Los Angeles and Portland, “anti-police and ‘criminal justice’” riots that “have left many people dead and injured and inflicted over $2 billion in property damage nationwide”, and the assassination of Charlie Kirk.
The center also points out that the president has no authority to declare domestic terrorist organizations, and says the orders could target a broad range of disfavored groups because it relates “everyone from labor organizers, socialists, many libertarians, those who criticize Christianity, pro-immigration groups, anti-ICE protestors, and racial justice and transgender activists, to anyone who holds views that the administration considers to be ‘anti-American.'”
Among others who have expressed opposition to NSPM-7: the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) issued a statement condemning it. Human Rights Watch said Trump’s order mobilizing federal law enforcement to investigate his perceived opponents “turns reality on its head”. The National Coalition Against Censorship characterized the directive as a “blueprint for law enforcement to cast a wide net in the name of terrorism and political violence, but it is unmistakable in targeting political opponents in its crosshairs.”
And so it goes — and is going. Stay tuned.
The second document, 2025-NSS, which is shorthand for “2025 National Security Strategy of the United States of America,” is even more frightening than NSPM-7. It details how Trump envisions the United States’ position in the world, a position that would completely derail us from the foreign policy that has led us since World War II. Observers noted that it could have been written “in just 14 words,” a reference to a popular white supremacist slogan.
The document is wordy, long and involved, but at the risk of over-telescoping or oversimplifying, it:
- Claims that institutions like the United Nations, alliances like the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and rules for foreign engagement have been bad for the United States because they “undermine the character of our nation.”
- States that the United States’ “inherent greatness and decency” and “the restoration and reinvigoration of American spiritual and cultural health” depend on “an America that cherishes its past glories and its heroes, and that looks forward to a new golden age…”
- Would achieve a white supremacist country by rejecting immigration as well as “the disastrous ‘climate change’ and ‘Net Zero’ ideologies that have so greatly harmed Europe, threatened the United States, and subsidize our adversaries.”
- Reorients the United States away from traditional European allies and toward Russia. It suggests that Europe is in danger of “civilizational erasure” by allowing continued migration, which it contends will render Europe “unrecognizable” within 20 years.
- Does not suggest that Russia is a country of concern to the U.S., but rather that European officials “hold unrealistic expectations” for an end to Russia’s war against Ukraine. It also complains that European governments are suppressing far-right political parties.
- Would divide the world into spheres of interest led by dominant countries. The United States would dominate the Western Hemisphere by using “tariffs and reciprocal trade agreements as powerful tools,” and discouraging Latin American nations from working with other nations.
- Calls for “closer collaboration between the U.S. Government and the American private sector. All our embassies must be aware of major business opportunities in their country, especially major government contracts. Every U.S. Government official that interacts with these countries should understand that part of their job is to help American companies compete and succeed.” It makes vividly clear that this policy is a plan to help U.S. businesses take over Latin America and, perhaps, Canada.
The White House’s release of NSS is usually accompanied by bells and whistles because it shows the administration’s foreign policy priorities and the way it envisions the position of the U.S. in the world. It may not surprise you, therefore, with the kinds of baggage Trump’s NSS carries, that the Trump administration released its NSS late at night and very quietly,
Why hasn’t the legacy media pounced on these anti-American efforts and blared them in our faces every day?
Because Trump’s plan – make that Project 2025’s plan that Trump is slavishly following — depends on “flooding the zone” with so many daily outrages that no one can keep up with them.
Consider: Every day bring uglier vindictiveness, bigger lies, wilder boasts and worse policies. The cruelty is almost unbearable — the destruction of USAID that has cost hundreds of thousands of lives, a number that soon will surpass a million; the pursuit, arrest, deportation, imprisonment and torture of undocumented immigrants, including American citizens or legal residents whose only sin is that their skin is brown, all without due process; the bombing of small boats in the Caribbean and blatant murders of more than 100 people because Trump thinks they were carrying illegal drugs, which is not even a capital crime; and on, and on, and on.
The Supreme Court and the Department of Justice are in Trump’s pocket. The Republican-controlled Congress has become his lapdog. It is up to us now, We the People, to pay attention and keep the pressure on until he breaks. And every day, he shows more and more signs that that day is not far off.
