“Juneteenth,” which is also known as “Freedom Day,” commemorates the day that the last enslaved Africans in the United States finally learned of their freedom, two years after being emancipated by President Lincoln. In the spirit of “Sankofa,” it is an opportunity to look back at how far we have come, as well as to look forward to the work we still need to do.
The day promises to be filled with fun for the whole family: Our old friends at Nia Productions, as the headliners of the event, will be drumming and dancing up a storm. In addition to other performers, there will be face-painting and games for kids, tons of food to choose from, and assorted informational and merchant vendors* to round out the experience.
More than anything, this is a chance for our community to come together and celebrate.
