October 5 3rd Annual “Be Fit” Through West African Drum & Dance Conference

and Nia Productions Inc. will be hosting their 
3rd Annual “Be Fit” Through West African Drum & Dance Conference  
Saturday, October 5, 2013 
Dance FX Charleston Dance Studio, 
635 Rutledge Ave #103, Charleston, SC. 

The focus of the conference is to expose residents of the lowcountry to traditional Malian, Ivory Coast and Guinean music, song, dance, folklore and drum while getting them physically fit. Moreover, we will focus on heart health and longevity while having fun.

WORKSHOPS
This will be a full day of workshops, from 10am-5:30pm, that will be taught by internationally renowned artists from Mali, Ivory Coast and Guinea.

  • Participants will get to participate in dances that are the predecessors of the Gullah people and understand its connection.  The classes are $12 in advance. 
  • A children’s only dance workshop will be at 10:00am. Children will learn traditional dances. Children’s specific class is $5.

CONCERT
The concert “Traditions of Africa Relived” will feature original and authentic pieces of dance, drum and song from Mali, Ivory Coast and Guinea. The concert will feature Charleston’s own West African Dance Ensemble, Wona Womalan and teaching guest artists.

  • The concert will be at Physicians Auditorium on the College of Charleston’s Campus at 66 George St. The cost is $15 in advance.
