VHO 2023 DESCRIPTION
VHO is a weeklong free medical clinic and pharmacy that serves multiple rural villages. Patients span the entire age range. VHO is directed by a Ghanaian physician and many Ghanaian health care providers (physicians, physician assistants, nurses, social workers) serve. The VHO has oversight by the South Carolina nonprofit and Ghanaian NGO, Project OKURASE.
ROLES OF VOLUNTEERS – IT’S NOT NECESSARY TO BE MEDICALLY TRAINED TO BE INVOLVED
If trained, volunteers may assist the Ghanaian providers, lab scientists, and nurses taking vitals and triage. Volunteers who are not medical providers are very key to organizing the VHO, escorting patients, helping patients feel safe and comfortable, working in the pharmacy with the pharmacist, organizing records, and engaging children.
