Countdown to Juneteenth: African Mask-Making Workshop (ages 7-18)
Christine King Mitchell educates young people about African cultures and their connection to the Lowcountry. Participants will decorate masks with common items and art supplies. Registration begins June 3. Space is limited.

Master drummer Bob Smalls leads this hands-on workshop, encouraging participants to listen and create their

View the work of Gullah Cultural artist Bro. Nizar. His collection of paintings tells the story of the Gullah history, culture and people.

Countdown to Juneteenth: Middle Passage Connections (teens & adults)
Take part in a discussion of slavery with Azikiwe Chandler, chair of the Charleston Remembrance Committee, and pay
homage to the millions of enslaved Africans who perished in the Middle Passage. Thomalind Martin Polite, a seventh
generation descendant of a Middle Passage survivor who arrived in South Carolina in 1756, also speaks. A portion of the
documentary Priscilla’s Homecoming will be shown.

Enjoy a panel discussion about the holiday with guest panelists Dr. Ade Ofunniyin, anthropologist and grandson of the legendary Phillip Simmons; Ramona La Roche, artist and educator; and Ethel Taylor, president of the Lowcountry Juneteenth Association.

Bring a book that you’ve been reading this summer. Dr. Conseula Francis College of Charleston will lead a discussion on Reading as Social Action. Light refreshments and door prizes provided.

Tales of Aesop, the Great African presented by King David of Tut Tut Kemetic Group (all ages)
Learn about ancient African cultures through King David’s interactive storytelling, and view a small exhibit of photographs and documents. Participants receive an Egyptian collar, cuff or headband to decorate and take home.
