JUNIOR YOUTH SPIRITUAL EMPOWERMENT PROGRAM

JYSEP is an international non-profit organization whose aim is to help young people, ages 11-15, to develop their powers of expression, to strive for excellence, to develop a strong moral foundation, and engage in meaningful service to their communities. We also invite individuals, ages 16+, to join us in a mentoring training which assists us to channel the surging energies of junior youth towards positive change, assist them in developing their capacities, and remain hopeful that they can contribute to the betterment of society.

EBONY CITY SOCCER CLUB

ECSC is the longest continuously operating inner-city youth soccer program in the country. In the spirit of Harambee, they have been providing positive direction for youth between the ages of 5 and 16 years since 1981.

 SOUTH CAROLINA CARIBBEAN CULTURE & HERITAGE

SCCCH is a non-profit organization dedicated to the research, education, preservation, and promotion of the Culture & Heritage of the Caribbean through music, dance, and theater. The unique culture of the Caribbean is influenced by Europe, Africa, the Indigenous Taino and Caribe Tribes, Republic of India and the People’s Republic of China. SCCCH hosts an annual festival, Charleston Carifest Caribbean Carnival in celebration of June as Caribbean American Heritage Month, and the Carifest Salute to Women a biennial event to educate, inspire, recognize, and empower women. Throughout the year we work to educate the community and seek to promote community unity through culture. Membership is open to everyone regardless of colour, race or creed.

Charleston Waterkeeper is a local environmental nonprofit organization. Our mission is to protect and restore Charleston’s waterways for our community and for future generations. We do this through our data-driven programs, advocacy campaigns, and promoting wise stewardship decisions through education and outreach activities. Our overarching goal is to protect the public’s fundamental right to clean, healthy water.

RAG QUILTING PRESERVATION INITIATIVE

The Rag Quilting Initiative is a strategy for sustainable preservation of the little known Gullah textile tradition of rag quilting.  The origin of this textile tradition dates back to the antebellum period when enslaved women used a bone to attach rags to discorded feed and grain sacks to create a quilt.  The Initiative provides educational resources for rural artisans, develops marketing strategies and income/employment by utilizing a cottage industry system.  Thereby allowing participants to work from their homes and ultimately improve the quality of their lives.

DESTINY COMMUNITY CAFE

Destiny Community Café is the only OWEE Pay What You Can Cafe in South Carolina.  Its patrons set the price for their mostly local & organic as much as possible, soul food cuisine. If you can give more, please do. If you have a little less, pay what you can. If your pockets are empty, exchange an hour of volunteer work at Destiny for one of the café’s mouth-watering meals.

TASTE OF GULLAH

A Taste of Gullah is an events company that offers an experience with music, artwork, dance, historical and more. A Taste of Gullah is just a hint of what lies deep with in the Gullah culture and all the historical cultures that is woven into its textured fabric. A Taste of Gullah is a community oriented organization who primary goal is cultural awareness and identification to the Gullah/ Geechie region.

ARTHUR W CHRISTOPHER COMMUNITY CENTER

The AWCCC, located across the street from Burke High School, provides numerous programs and activities for local youth and adults. The facility features a full size basketball court, a multi-purpose gymnasium, several activity rooms, meeting spaces, an exercise equipment room, and a full kitchen. Check out the web site for information on current programs.

GULLAH GEECHIE ANGEL NETWORK

The mission of Gullah Geechie Angel Network is to preserve, protect , and promote the cultural heritage of the Gullah/Geechee People who have lives in the Southeastern portion of the United States of America from Cape Fear, North Carolina to Jacksonville, Florida 30 to 35 miles inland (known as the “Low Country” ) for more than 300 years, and to connect all people, not just in the 50 states, but internationally throughout the Diaspora, Europe, Caribbean and Africa.
