New Woodworking School to Open this Week
A new school for students who want to learn the art of traditional woodworking opens with a four-day workshop that starts Aug. 6 in Charleston. During workshops, others of which will occur this fall, students will build a traditional Craftsman-style round side table and learn skills of crating hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery.
The Charleston Woodworking School was founded by professional woodworker Samuel P. Sprouse, owner of Sprouse Custom Furniture in Charleston.
“The Charleston Woodworking School has been designed to give the student a first-class education in the specifics of woodworking. Emphasis is placed on the student’s initiative in the classroom and in the woodworking shop. The workshops and full-time classes will provide students an opportunity to learn the basics of wood creation. At the conclusion of the professional courses offered by The Charleston Woodworking School, the graduate will have the basic skills to continue working in the areas of furniture design, furniture making, antique restoration and repair, specialty wood projects, project management, and marketing.”
