In honor of Black History month, this year’s Heritage Day is dedicated to the Maroons. Maroons were escaped slaves who fled into the swamps and formed small communities in order to survive. Places like Four Holes Swamp provided many resources for food and herbal medicines, as well as materials to craft everything from tools to trade goods. They were also places of respite and healing for the downtrodden and mistreated.
James Williams, one of those escaped slaves, eventually made his way from Four Holes Swamp to freedom in Maine. Come listen to a reenactment of his story, see an example of a Maroon encampment, and learn about the technologies used Maroons used to survive such as shingle riving, split oak basketry, basic outdoor cooking, herbal medicine, and old-time fishing techniques.
Guided walks will be given in 20 minute intervals beginning at 10 a.m.
