Trying to find something to do this weekend? Look no further than Park Circle, where 32 indie short films from around the world will be screened for Charleston cinephiles. Brought to you by the Park Circle Film Society, the 9th Lowcountry Shorts Festival will kick off this Saturday, with the first of four 90-minute blocks beginning at 4 p.m.
Begun in 2008 by a group of Park Circle residents that found the independent film options in Charleston lacking, the Park Circle Film Society screened its first film on December 6th, 2008. Even with the indie selection right at their fingertips, cofounder Nicholai Burton and his counterparts still felt that finding the best new indie short films to screen was neither easy nor flexible. Thus, the Lowcountry Indie Shorts Festival was born.
For the first four years, the festival (now just called the Lowcountry Shorts Fest) took place biannually. As part of a recent rebranding effort, the festival will now be held once a year. Park Circle Film Society board member Karen Black feels that the rebranding has helped the festival: “We feel our more concentrated effort this year has really paid off in a record-breaking number of submissions, allowing us to choose the highest quality films, and to program a unique blend of edgy and thoughtful fare. As Emeril would say, we’re ‘taking it up a few notches.’”
To date, the festival has screened over 70 films from eight countries. This year alone, there was a record 179 entries from 25 countries. The competitive selection process whittled the entries down to 32 films that will be competing for the regional, national, and international Spotlight Awards.
Showtimes are Saturday, September 28th with Block 1 beginning at 4:00 p.m. and Block 2 at 8:30 p.m. Block 3 will begin on Sunday, September 29th at 2:00 p.m., with Block 4 starting at 7:00 p.m.
