[EVENT] [GOOD CREDIT] PLEASE SHARE:Despite being approved in February 2014, the Legare Bridge Bike & Pedestrian Lane remains unbuilt. There is no safe way to walk or ride a bike over the Ashley River between West Ashley and the peninsula.
April ushers in the completion of Phase I: the installation of the car-centric additional left turn lane at Bee and Lockwood. Conversely, the Bike & Pedestrian Lane has inexplicably been delayed another 9 months. Since approval, this totals three unjust delays. We cannot allow another.
Gather on the steps of City Hall to urge the Mayor and members of City and County Council to expeditiously install the approved facility in the name of safety and community connection.
“This is the City’s long overdue make-or-break quality of life project. All people deserve the ability to move about our city safely and with dignity, not just those in cars. Our streets are public space, there’s no room for politics and unnecessary delays when safety is involved. Stop studying studies,” said Charleston Moves’ Executive Director Kurt Cavanaugh.
28 people have been killed while walking or riding a bike on Charleston County streets since this project was approved. We average 215 incapacitating bike/pedestrian injuries every year. Each individual loss is a collective tragedy. We are unwilling to withstand more delays to an approved and funded project that will increase our safety and connect our community.
Charleston Moves is a nonprofit organization advocating for enhanced conditions for walking and riding a bike in Charleston County. Our work hinges on three approaches to creating a safe, connected and livable environment: advocacy, safety and community.
