Enough Pie’s New Community Kiosk?
[GOOD CREDIT] PLEASE SHARE:Enough Pie’s most recent UP-Start grant award went to Pamela Simons for her idea for artful, community-centric kiosks in the Upper Peninsula where neighbors and organizations can share key information for residents, businesses and passerbys. The goal is to offer news pertinent to the neighborhood that is not computer or web dependent, but is on the ground at street level for increased community engagement and connectivity.
The first community kiosk is underway at the intersection of Meeting, Morrison, and Mount Pleasant Streets in the Upper Peninsula and will be complete by the end of February, 2016.
Affectionately referred to as “Meetin’ UP” — the community kiosk is a hollow triangle about 8 feet tall designed by Charleston architect Aaron Bowman. Its three sides have different functions — to communicate, to share information, and to offer books. The “Free Little Library” (a first in the Upper Peninsula) features nine themed mailboxes for newsletters, books, and community fliers. The second side has cork board for posting signs and fliers, and the third side is a chalkboard for aspiring artists or hand-written notes.
The kiosk will permanently feature helpful neighborhood and City information, like when your monthly Neighborhood Association meeting is, who to call if your landlord skimps on heat and who your City Councilmember is. Civics 101!
The team includes Charleston architect Aaron Bowman, designer and builder Paul Gibson of Cline Homes, Charlie Letts, a regular volunteer builder for Enough Pie and a nearby resident in North Central, and Chandler Threatt, a West Ashley High School sophomore who volunteered to be sous-carpenter. Once the structure was built, the EP Team with Pamela Simons painted it, and Brittany Bates hand painted the signage and lettering.
The kiosk is almost complete! Now, we are eager to keep the new FREE LITTLE LIBRARY mailboxes stocked with plenty of books. Community members are invited to donate gently used books in the following categories: romance, mystery/science fiction, history, cooking, young adult, children’s or magazines.
Books will live in standard sized mailboxes, so preferred dimensions are 9.25 x 6.25 or smaller.
