Please join us every Saturday in October from 12 – 2PM to tie into our community rag quilt. Guided by indigo and textile artists, this quilt will be dedicated to the John L. Dart Library on Saturday, December 9th to celebrate their major 90th anniversary celebration.
The indigo-dyed fabrics for this project were created as part of AWAKENING IV: Indigo. As the first ever, public indigo dye space in SC, Enough Pie’s Indigo VAT SHACK offered hands-on experiences with indigo, a historic and sacred dye plant with deeps roots in SC.
The Gullah textile tradition of rag quilting began during the antebellum period when women used discarded feed and grain sacks, split them open at the seams and tied in rags using a bone as a tool. Once attached to the burlap backing, they tied two knots, permanently securing the rags. Using this same techique, help up complete the Community Rag Quilt for John L. Dart Library!
