Holiday Gingerbread Village on December 12
New educational nonprofit to build holiday spirit while promoting the arts, sciences, and
entrepreneurship.
(Charleston, S.C.) On December 12, 2013 from 5:30 pm -7:00 pm, children from around Charleston will converge on a local library to build a little yuletide spirit.
Corpus Callosum, an educational non-profit organization in downtown Charleston, will host a Gingerbread Village workshop at the John L. Dart Library, on Meeting Street.
Youth aged 6-12 can sign up to come with an adult to this free of cost event.

This event will enhance critical thinking skills as well as social skills because it will allow teams of one student with an accompanying adult to create building plans based on a budget and then to build their structure out of edible materials. Each item will have a simulated price associated with it – from $1.00 gingerbread pieces and edible glue for the walls and mortar to $.50 marshmallows and candy canes to decorate the lawn. The teams will have just $20 of play money to spend on their entire project and after they finish their plans they will receive materials to build their structure. They won’t be alone though. Several expert mentors will be onsite to assist the teams in designing and creating their unique structures. This family-fun event highlights science, engineering, literacy, math and the arts. While learning a little bit about working together, creating budgets and using building principles, sampling the construction materials is actually encouraged!
This type of activity is exactly what Corpus Callosum is about – creating fun, hands-on experiences that connect the arts and sciences with entrepreneurship, as well as connecting with the greater community to utilize their expertise. This event is geared to be the first of many community events that will engage children in unique learning experiences.
