CharlestonGOOD & Friends are proud participants in the 4th annual STEM Education Day presented by the College of Charleston School of Science and Mathematics, Lowcountry Hall of Science and Math, and Lady Cougars Basketball team.
Our community partners will be providing hands-on science, technology, engineering and math activities to hundreds of Lowcountry students who will be gathering at TD Arena for the festivities beginning at 9:30am today. After stretching their minds in the morning, students will get to stretch their legs while watching the Lady Cougars take on Elon.
It promises to be a wonderful day!

CharlestonGOOD is a local grassroots media network, resource center, and service provider that celebrates & supports local efforts which address social, economic and environmental problems impacting our community.
CharlestonGood will analyze the difference between genuine and superficial smiles by using hand mirrors and photographs to identify the Duschenne muscles. We will also look at the correlation between kindness and individual and community health.

Soccer Connects is a Lowcountry-based social enterprise committed to fostering positive personal and community development through a shared love of the beautiful game.
Soccer Connects will have students create origami soccer balls to demonstrate the scientific properties of their unique geometric design.

XRCEL, developed by locally based company (New World Consumer Products), is the only immediate & extended Release carbohydrate supplement.
XRCEL will provide an interactive demonstration of time release science and nutrient dispersal using heat and beverages.

Charleston Waterkeeper is a local environmental nonprofit organization. Our mission is to protect and restore Charleston’s waterways for our community and for future generations. We do this through our data-driven programs, advocacy campaigns, and promoting wise stewardship decisions through education and outreach activities. Our overarching goal is to protect the public’s fundamental right to clean, healthy water.
Our activity will be building your own watershed model! Students will design a watershed model using clay and then add pollution (candy!) to the system to observe how water sources are connected and how actions upstream affect water quality downstream.

Youth 2 Ocean [Y2O] provides positive youth development through opportunities in water sports, environmental education, and exploration of nature, especially for underserved and at-risk youth.
Y2O will define what a wave is, demonstrate differences between transverse waves and longitudinal waves, determine which an ocean wave is (ocean waves have properties of both), and look at how boats, kayaks, and surf boards are designed for different conditions.

Wild Ideaz is about family-centered learning. We organize workshops about hands-on learning activities with parents and grandparents. The activities are simple, surprising, low-cost, done in a few minutes. We show parents how to do them, take them home, and share them with their children.
Wild Ideaz will focus on light and sight as themes–a hologram, a toy fish that disappears as it is submerged, coke that turns colorless and some optical illusions.

Nobly will demonstrate the visual effects that software development can have on a users experience. We will allow the children to see that a few simple lines of code can have a powerful impact.

MUSC Urban Farm is designed to be a living classroom where students, faculty, staff, and the community come together to explore the connection between food and health through hands-on learning about the many varieties of vegetables, fruit, and herbs grown in South Carolina.
MUSC Urban Farm will be teaching about WORMS: their role in soil ecology, growing plants, and health and nutrition.
