Duppy Conqueror’s Bus2Beach Party
Sunday, May 16, 2021 at 2 PM
A North Charleston Celebration of CARTA’s plans to return to the beach.
Uplift Charleston and other N. Charleston groups will be holding a “blessing” where they will distribute food and clothing to the community. There will be food, music and activities for children’s and adults. This will be right on the #10 Rivers Ave. and #11 Bus lines. We’ll have model buses for artists to decorate available before the event which we’ll present to the public as examples of how own Jamaican style bus to the beach might look.
We hope to advance plans for our Kids Reach the Sea effort where children will take supervised and guided rides to the beach on CARTA after having taken safety swimming lessons and area pools. We’re counting on help from the faith community to make this happen and a few churches have already stepped forward.
The phrase “Duppy Conqueror” is Jamaican for someone who triumphs over elusive challenges, often ghosts of the night. It’s a term of honor in their culture, with a complex and rich context. Our celebration will take it’s tone and sound from Jamaica and it’s famous tradition of colorfully decorated community buses which often go to the beach and connect to their more traditional urban bus systems.
This event will be socially distanced. Please wear a mask. Our Covid Busters will be fighting the virus at the event, being real “Duppy Conquerors” while keeping people safe.
