We are blessed with an abundance of riches here in the Lowcountry and the good people of Sweetgrass Garden Coop have figured out a great way to spread the wealth to those in need.
Sweetgrass Garden Coop is a nonprofit farm on Johns Island that’s mission is to
“provide free, fresh, naturally grown, local produce to charitable food distribution agencies in South Carolina and to support that effort by growing a portion of the produce for income to sustain the enterprise.”

Sweetgrass Garden works with agencies like the Lowcountry Foodbank, Fields to Families, Our Lady of Mercy Community Outreach and Crisis Ministries to expand access to healthy food in our community.
The farm utilizes hundreds of volunteers each year and this hands-on community service is an essential aspect, not only of food production, but also of community education. Sweetgrass Garden Coop is committed to educating the public about organic farming, composting, and the importance of developing better food distribution systems.
They are also committed to learning innovative farming techniques themselves. The Charleston City Paper published a great story on Farm Manager, Dale Snyder’s fish compost research that is a wonderful read.
