From the good folks at Lowcountry Action Committee…
Help the Lowcountry Action Committee (LAC) support Charleston’s historically Black Eastside community. Our goal is to provide families with 1000 Freedom Bags throughout the year 2021 which will include groceries, PPE, and supplemental resources to support their wellbeing.
In a world where politicians with cushy salaries fight over whether the American people deserve $600 or $2000 survival payments during a pandemic that’s been raging for 10+ months, and where giant corporations are given billions of dollars to sustain their exploitative systems—people in Charleston still are struggling to meet their basic needs.
Over-policing is funded to the tune of 54 million dollars in the city, while urban and community development repeatedly gets 1% of the city’s budget and sometimes less.
Charleston is not safe when 27.6% of residents face shelter poverty, when more pedestrians die from unsafe streets than almost anywhere else in the United States, when many suffer from low wages and high cost of living, or when our neighbors cannot access healthy food and the mental health or substance use treatment they need.
Charleston is not safe when Black families and communities experience daily and long-term damage caused by underfunded public services and gentrification. When community members can’t afford to eat or pay their bills, the people must organize themselves through mutual aid and cooperation.
We’ll provide regular updates regarding the progress of this initiative. Thank you for supporting the LAC and the people!
