Hi! We are Christen and Julia, and we want to bring your community bookstore to you!
A few years back, we met at the Denver Publishing Institute and had a blast learning how to become publishing rockstars. Then, we both ended up in Charleston, South Carolina, and we couldn’t get bookstores off our brains.
Charleston is made up of many vibrant neighborhoods, but we have always thought that most of them have lacked something very special, something that is really quite key for community spaces: bookstores! Finally, we decided if no one else would bring the bookstores, we’d bring one ourselves.
Like other business ventures, bookstores are expensive. The books, the build out, the rent, the bills: they all add up. And as we both hail from the publishing industry, we aren’t exactly raking it in. So, we decided that instead of giving up on our dream, we would flip the script: who says we need to be in one location? Who says we have to have rent in a tourist town? It worked for so many food trucks; we think it can work for bookstores, too.This is where you, dear reader, come in.
We know Charleston neighborhoods want to see a great new bookstore here because we’ve heard from them. We asked around, the votes are in: you love books, and you want more of them. We also know (hope) that our neighbors are supportive and generous.
