It Takes a Village…

It Takes a Village…

The World Soil Day (WSD) campaign aims to connect people with soils and raise awareness on their critical importance in our lives.
World Soil Day (WSD) raises awareness on their critical importance of soil in all of our lives.

December 5 is WORLD SOIL DAY.

We’re celebrating this global event by reaching out to our local community to ask for help nurturing Okurase, our sister village in Ghana.

Project Okurase, a local nonprofit, gives us all the opportunity to express our gratitude for the relative abundance within our community by replicating one of our amazing resources, MUSC URBAN FARM, in a community that desperately needs access to healthier food.

In January, MUSC Urban Farm educator, Carmen Ketron, will travel with volunteers and supplies from around the country to build organic garden beds, and a new playground, for the children of Okurase.

Please consider donating to our collaborative Seed Money campaign. We have already won a free $400 prize for the rapid start to our campaign, and we are currently in 6th place in a competition for additional free funds. Every little bit helps. Really.

If you would like to know more about the 15+ year relationship between Charleston and Okurase, check out the fantastic article recently published in the MUSC Catalyst.

Highlights include the stories of

  • how kids and parents from Union Heights got trained in AIDS awareness and then traveled to Okurase on a cultural/educational exchange trip that changes lives on both sides of the Atlantic.
  • how architecture students from Clemson developed the plans for the community center in Okurase.
  • how students from Sundrops Montessori “ran laps for a friend” to help their Ghanaian classmate from Okurase.
  • how students form California and Ohio have worked with folks from Charleston to help Okurase with both technology and people power.

Truly, the story of Project Okurase and this ongoing collaborative is heart-warming and inspiring and you can be a part of it by supporting the latest “story” in this wonderful work.
