“The Gullah Geechee and Bunce Island–Sierra Leone Connection”
Morris Brown A.M.E Church
13 Morris Street | Charleston
March 1st | 6:00-8:00 PM
Free and open to the public.
Joseph Opala has spent more than 40 years studying Bunce Island, the largest British slave trading base on the “Rice Coast” of West Africa, and its links to South Carolina and Georgia. Opala also organized two “Gullah Homecomings” to Sierra Leone in which Gullah families with proven historical ties to that nation were hosted by the Sierra Leone Government as lost kinsmen come home. Opala will discuss Bunce Island and the Gullah Homecomings, and their importance for illustrating Lowcountry history.
