In a moving ceremony at City Hall today, Charleston Mayor Joe Riley declared January 22 “Project Okurase Day” in honor of the incredible work done by Samuel “Powerful” Yeboah, an artist and community activist from Ghana, and project supporters and participants here in Charleston and in Okurase, Ghana.
Project Okurase is a collaborative effort to empower people in rural communities in Ghana to be able to help themselves by improving healthcare, education, and job-skills training, one village at a time.
What started as a trans-atlantic purchase of drums for the Djole African Dance and Drum Company in the Union Heights community here in Charleston, has blossomed into an incredible project involving Powerful, Clemson architects, global visionaries from MUSC, community organizers from Union Heights, a bevy of diverse supporters and volunteers here in Charleston, and 21 bold young people and their families from Union Heights who traveled to Ghana after learning about the challenges faced by their peers in Okurase.
