The festival’s longest-running event exclusively devoted to the craft of fiction, the Piccolo Fiction Open invites four writers to present 5 minute “short short” stories. The reading will be held in the lush courtyard of Blue Bicycle Books, and each story will begin with the words “I ducked into the alley…” Since 2000, Piccolo Fiction Open has featured dozens of S.C. writers, with stories broadcast by S.C. Public Radio’s ‘Your Day’, and published in the Charleston City Paper.
THE 2013 WRITERS ARE:
- PETER ORNER’s stories have won numerous awards and have appeared in the Atlantic Monthly, the Paris Review and others. His most recent novel is Love and Shame and Love. Originally from Chicago, he teaches at San Francisco State University.
- CAMERON JONES grew up in Charleston and graduated from Clemson University with a
degree in English. He has worked at Blue Bicycle Books since 2011 and will begin medical school this fall. This will be his second public reading this year as well as the second of his life. - SARA C. THOMASON holds an MFA in fiction from Sarah Lawrence College. She was awardedsecond prize in the 2012 Zoetrope: All-Story Short Fiction Contest. Currently she lives on Isle of Palms, where she is hard at work on a novel.
- JOHN WARNER is the author of the novel, The Funny Man, a weekly columnist for the Chicago Tribune’s Printers Row book supplement, and editor at large of McSweeney’s Internet Tendency. He is a visiting instructor at the College of Charleston.
