From our friends at S.C. Se Grant Consortium…
The Consortium has partnered with the nonprofit Minorities in Aquaculture, providing three paid summer internships to women of color who are interested in learning the fundamentals of shellfish aquaculture. This hands-on workforce training program educates minority women about the environmental benefits of aquaculture and encourages careers in this field for a more diverse, inclusive aquaculture industry.
Olivia White (pictured above, grading oyster seed in the nursery) is an undergraduate student majoring in biology with a concentration in environmental science at South Carolina State University; she is working at Lowcountry Oyster Company. Alyssia Villarreal is an undergraduate student majoring in marine science at University of South Carolina; she is working at Barrier Island Oyster Company. Deja Best is a graduate student majoring in environmental health sciences at University of South Carolina; she will soon be working at Charleston Oyster Farm.
